A border town, on the border, into the border: where until thirty years ago there were guards and controls, now are the bike paths and open roads to join Gorizia to Nova Goriza and Sen Peter, in a single town whose main symbol is the square of Transalpina, where the border was removed to make room for a large, circular square. Gorizia, was for 400 years dominated by the Habsburg Empire, it was known as “The austrian Nizza” in the eighteenth century the printers printed in seven languages: Italian, Slovenian, German, Hebrew, Friulian, Istroveneto, Hungarian. It is this multiculturalism that one breathes in Gorizia in the names of the streets, in the architecture of the Habsburg palaces, in the surnames of the people, that although in part loves to claim exclusively Italian roots, is in reality a melting pot of Central European cultures and traditions, where the Slovenian component has always been part of the city.
A sleeping beauty who is slowly awakening from the slumber of the last century, and also thanks to the active revival of Nova Gorica, a recent town built mostly after the Second World War, a lively university centre and the winner of the 2025 European City of Culture bid
where, also involving its Italian sister into this cultural celebration, both cities can demonstrate how the crossing of a border built on a sterile idea of nationalism, can bring to a developing reality based on cooperation to reach the goal of multicultural events. It is amazing, for a citizen born in Gorizia as I am, to see the rebirth of an idea of unification, respect for different languages and cultures, aimed at mutual growth. I would like to scream to everybody: “Come, and visit this wonderful little city!”
Deciding to buy a house in Gorizia means choosing a relaxing town,
with many gardens and tree-lined avenues, where to move on foot or by bicycle is favoured both by the logistics of the city and by numerous interventions of the last administrations, where the cultural landscape is assured by the palimpsests of two excellent theaters (one Slovenian and one Italian) events with historical and food and wine background: a town where you can still find, at fair prices, new buildings or fascinating solutions in buildings, once of value, now to be restored, ensuring a housing solution that breathes the Central European air of past centuries. leads to a little over an hour to its source, perfect for lovers of kayaking, mountain and coolness. Half an hour from the airport, within an hour you can reach the seaside resorts of the region. Gorizia, a small corner of paradise!
